Vesak is the holiest celebration of the Buddhists around the
globe which falls on the full moon day of May every year. It is a celebration
of three remarkable events of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing

Once again the organizing committee made the decision to
celebrate Vesak in person. This is dubbed as “Vesak Festival 2026: Buddha’s
Birthday celebration” and will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from
3.00 pm to 7.00 pm. at the Mississauga Celebration Square. This event will be
joined by all the Buddhist Temples in the Greater Toronto Area, Peel and York
Regions. The event includes: blessings chanting ceremonies by
Buddhist monks and nuns, the virtual Bathing Buddha ritual, traditional music
and dance, martial arts and much more!

Canada’s Largest Buddhist Festival Returns to Mississauga
14th Annual Vesak Celebration to Welcome Over 10,000 Attendees
Mississauga, ON — The 14th Annual Vesak Festival, Canada’s largest Buddhist cultural and spiritual celebration, will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Mississauga Celebration Square.
Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Gautama Buddha, whose teachings on peace, compassion, and wisdom continue to guide millions around the world. This free public event invites people of all backgrounds to come together in a spirit of harmony, mindfulness, and cultural appreciation.
The celebration will begin with a vibrant Vesak Parade at 3:00 PM around City Hall, followed by the official opening ceremony at 4:00 PM. Organized by four leading Buddhist temples—Fo Guang Shan Temple, West End Buddhist Temple & Meditation Centre, Cham Shan Temple, and Karma Sonam Dargye Ling Tibetan Temple—the festival reflects the rich diversity of the Greater Toronto Area.
“Vesak is not only a celebration for Buddhists, but a reminder for all of us to cultivate kindness, peace, and understanding in our daily lives,” said Bhante Saranapala, Chair of the Organizing Committee, widely known as the Urban Buddhist Monk.
Last year’s event attracted over 8,000 attendees, including government representatives, community leaders, and families. This year, organizers anticipate more than 10,000 participants.
The 2026 festival will feature Most Venerable Pannakara Bhikkhu, founder of the Walk for Peace initiative, as the Chief Guest.
Festival Highlights
Attendees can look forward to a dynamic and immersive cultural experience, including:
- Multicultural chanting from Theravāda, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna traditions
- Traditional music and dance performances from diverse Asian cultures
- A live Shaolin martial arts demonstration
- A Southeast Asian food-tasting experience
- The “Buddhism 101” booth offering accessible teachings and interactive Q&A
- Sacred chanting and recitations in multiple languages, including Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, Vietnamese, Sinhalese, Khmer, Burmese, Thai, Japanese, and more
Monks, nuns, and lay practitioners from various traditions will participate in ceremonial robes, adding a profound sense of authenticity and spiritual beauty to the event.
