Dear Devotees,
We hope you are as excited as we are for “Buddha’s Birthday Celebration” this Saturday at Celebration Square. The day is sure to be a wonderful celebration for all of us but in the spirit of Vesak we have decided to take this opportunity to help those less fortunate. This Saturday we are running a food drive, collecting non-perishable food items for food banks in the Region of Peel.
Everyday, thousands of people in Ontario depend on food banks to feed themselves and their families. However, the demand on food banks is extremely high and they often run out of resources. Food banks are dependent upon generous donations from those who are able to donate. Goodwill and charity have always been distinct Buddhist values and Vesak is a time to bring happiness to others. So, in the spirit of Buddhism and Vesak, let us come together to provide help to those who need it. Any non-perishable food items such as canned goods will be greatly appreciated. Below is a list of items that are frequently in high demand:
- Breakfast supplies, cereal –hot and cold; pancake mix, syrup (high demand)
- Pasta Sauce
- Canned Meat
- Canned Vegetables
- Canned Fruit
- Kraft Mac & Cheese and Instant Noodles
- Snacks such as puddings, Jello, Granola Bars
- Juices & Drink Boxes
- Water
- Cake Mixes
- Diapers (size 3 in high demand)
- Sanitary Products: ie. toilet paper, pads, tampons
- Hygiene products – soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste (high demand)
All donations will be greatly appreciated and will be very helpful to people in our community who cannot provide for themselves. The food will be donated in the names of the West-End Buddhist Temple, the Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, Ching Kwok Buddhist Temple Toronto and Cham Shan Temple. This food drive will secondarily serve as a vehicle to raise awareness of the Buddhist Community in Ontario and our principles and beliefs. We look forward to celebrating Buddhism and Buddha’s Birthday this Saturday, please join us in celebrating and in helping others.
Thank you.
